Overview

Demolition Squad (DS), Gauteng’s longest-standing Breaking crew, proudly presents the official South African Qualifier for the prestigious Indian Ocean Dance World Championships 2025, taking place in Mauritius this September.

This qualifier is more than just a competition—it’s a gateway for South African dancers to shine on the world stage in three dynamic styles: Breaking, Afrobeat & Hip Hop.

Breaking, or breakdancing, is an acrobatic street dance that originated in the 1970s U.S. hip hop culture. It includes stylized footwork, intricate moves, and powerful freezes, performed by b-boys and b-girls using techniques like toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. The dance promotes improvisation, personal expression, and creativity, especially in friendly competitions called battles or cyphers.

Afrobeats is a vibrant West African music and dance genre that blends traditional rhythms with jazz, funk, and hip hop. Characterized by catchy melodies and energetic dance moves, it has gained worldwide popularity. The dance style promotes creative expression and showcases Africa’s musical diversity, serving as a cultural bridge through rhythm and dance.

Hip hop dance is an energetic street dance style that began in the U.S. in the 1970s. It includes various styles like breaking, locking, and popping, known for rhythmic, freestyle movements. Performed to hip hop music, it emphasizes creativity, personal expression, and connection to the beat, making it a dynamic artistic form.
